AC AND HOW IT WORKS

[XC90, XC70, V90, V70, V50, V40, S90, S80, S70, S60, S40, C70, 960, 940, 850, 780, 760, 740, 260, 240]

The air conditioning compressor is the heart of the Volvo AC system. Freon is a gas that can be compressed and circulated throughout the AC system. An expansion valve causes the Freon to expand and contract and that transforms it into a very cold gas that passes through the AC evaporator. A small blower fan in front of the evaporator blows across cold evaporator and then through vents to the inside of your Volvo. Heat is then removed form the the cabin with the help of the AC condenser located in front of the radiator. The Freon carries the heat and as it is forced thru fins, outside air is pulled through the condenser by the cooling fan to remove the heat from the Freon.
The basics are: The AC compressor is turned on and driven by the AC belt, after the cabin fan motor is turned on the air is blown over cooled fins of the AC evaporator which in turn cools down the air that is entering the vehicle to cool down the interior cabin air.
